SPILLAGE is a contemporary dance work about Asian American women grappling with identity, specifically our relationship to whiteness and patriarchy. SPILLAGE asks how we internalize and perform societal expectations of our identity, what it means to reject certain cultural narratives and what it looks like to engage yellow female bodies in an amplification of personal/collective voice.

What the creative team really wanted to express with this piece was how Asian American women are taught to conform to white societal pressure and how their own cultural identity, attributed to the color yellow in this work, spills out from that pressure. So the dancers and I co-created the color palette we would use through conversations and showing the color of light to the Asian American Dancers in the space, tying the color to their own personal meanings related to the piece.

What I worked hardest on in this piece was to remove my white male identity from the process of directing the visuals around the construction of the lighting design.  Working with Choreographer, Emily Tolson, I had her help me to build the visual vocabulary for the piece, centering around the construction of female Asian identity.  I then used the vocabulary to build the lighting design responding to the rhythms of the music and the dancers movements in the space.
